As always, I enjoy your weekly posting. Why did you think the first envelopment started in Lima, Peru and not one of the various "Lima" cities sin the US? (e.g., OH, IL, NY, etc)? Was it the fact that it took so long to get to NYC? Thanks!!!

Great question! That one may be worth more in a future PHS. The short answer has to do only partly with the dates (as you point out). The other reason is that Alsop & Co had offices in Lima, Peru and New York City - but not in Lima, Ohio, etc. The third reason has to do with the via New York marking - it was not common to see that docket with letters originating in the US for a foreign destination. But, it was more common with letters to be forwarded through New York from locations in South America & Latin America.

I understand. I have a few of those myself (that were hand carried across the Atlantic and then dropped into the domestic mail system). I didn't do the research on Alsop, but Lima Peru makes more sense. I assume then that the person who wrote on the envelope was more likely American than European (given the date format). As always, a great article. Made me go check to see if I had anything from Alsop as well (I do not).
