Moving information was much slower and more expensive in those days. . . and perhaps a little more carefully thought out and edited when it might take weeks or months for it to be transmitted.
An interesting thing I have noted is that things were not always as well thought out / edited as you might think. Lots of possible reasons. But, I DO think it is true that those who wrote to each other probably did think more about what they were saying and why they were saying it. As you say, communication was more expensive - both in money and in time.
